One Week Insane

Today was the first day of week 2 of Insanity!  I spent most of the first week sick (thank you flight home from Tampa), but I went hard on my workouts since it was just in the sinus area (sexy, I know).

Week 1 I lost 3.5 lbs (yay!) and feel really good.  I already feel my endurance picking up a bit and the inches (because that’s what matters most) coming down.

Game plan for the week was:

1. Ate mostly vegan with some dairy here and there via baked products.  I didn’t do a lot of cooking other than some reset recipes (beets, tempeh, greens, sweet potato bisque) and some baked potato fries.  I had a few meals out – a potluck where I made this AMAZING asparagus salad (which I am obsessed with now) and some stir fry meals at other restaurants.

2. I actually woke up on time.  I fell off a little bit after a late night on Thursday.  But for the most part I woke up on time without snooze assistance.  I do need to start going to bed earlier, but that’s my June goal to work on for the Fitbook #21daystochange challenge!  I will be winding down around 9:30 and in bed, lights off, phone NOT on at 10 at the LATEST.

3. Push myself.  I don’t usually have a problem with this but coming into my first week of really intense workouts in a while I was scared I wouldn’t do enough work.  So I broke out my heart rate monitor to make sure I pushed hard enough and I used the Xbox Fitness interface to help me monitor my efforts as well.  Both of these have paid off with getting better scores and results.  I don’t do the Xbox for every workout, I don’t want to get too used to it and not be able to function without it.  But I use it at least 2x a week right now.

Game plan for week 2?  All the same things. I will have leftover roasted potato and asparagus salad, making some cuban black beans and plantains (I’m beyond excited for this meal), roasting veggies, and some other goodies.  In general I’m just trying to eat plant based and watch my processed carbs and my grains.  I was thinking of trying 21 day fix vegan style buttttt no.  Not right now.  I’m going to ride this train of eating clean and loose but losing as long as I can.

Ultimate Reset Tips Part 2

Another video with reset tips!  This time focusing on what is going on during the reset instead of prep.  I hope it’s helpful to people new to the reset and if you have any questions please let me know.

What is the ultimate reset? Check it out here: http://www.myultimatereset.com/kimberlybrooks

I will be starting the reset for the 3rd time next Wednesday.  It’s time for a tune up and to reset my brain.  After a move and a new job and a lot of things happening I just am ready to woosah.  If you would like to reset with me, you need to purchase your kit by April 23rd otherwise you will have to pay for rush shipping to have your kit in time. If cost is an issue – contact me at kimbfitblog@gmail.com as there are some ways to bring the price down even more if you need to in order to get your hands on this really awesome program. It saved my life…I’m convinced I would still be gaining weight if I had not done it so I would love to work with you to figure out a way to help you make this work!

Minnesota Super Saturday

Today was Super Saturday!  Super Saturday is a quarterly Beachbody event for coaches (guests can come too though!) where it’s part business (learning about what is coming down the pike for the company, personal development) and part fitness (because you can’t put a bunch of Beachbody coaches together and NOT workout).  I actually never really went before this year to one but now that I have, I will NEVER miss one unless I really have to miss one.  It’s a great opportunity to meet other local coaches and just to be surrounded by ridiculous positivity.

Before I go into what I really got out of it…a few pics!

Today was also good for me to put a fire under my ass again.   In the door prize contest for most weight loss in the room….well I was #2.  Only one person beat me and he lost an amazing 125 lbs.  Well done sir!  Now even if I reach my goal by June 28th (next Super Saturday) I still wouldn’t beat that guy because my goal is less than 125.  BUT it reminded me how far I have come.  How much work I have done so far and how I should really stop being so blah about that part of this journey.  I’m always looking forward and looking at what’s left.  But what is important and what has made me who I am today is what I have already accomplished.  If there is nothing else I took from today…it’s that I need to keep in mind my success so far and never forget that.

It was also good because…well I have been slacking with workouts.  Partially diet related but fully not excusable.  I was tired from my eating and I let that dictate my mornings.  So I didn’t exercise like I should and I was too busy around lunch at work to squeeze in a workout so I let that be an excuse.  Too many excuses = too many missed workouts.  Then today we did 21 Day Fix Plyo Fix.

All those missed workouts and poor diet choices were like HI KIM I’M HERE!!!!!  I have only done that workout once before and I knew it was hard but whoa it was way harder today.  Okay.  I’m listening.  I already was but I’m REALLY listening now.

Even before today I had decided that today was going to be the first day of being back on a plant based diet.  I went to the grocery store last night and stocked up on some delicious produce.  I went to Super Saturday with strawberry Shakeology blended up with cherries and a banana (the best thing ever) and a big container of fruit – strawberries, apple, banana.  I had a big salad and a pear for lunch and broccoli and chickpeas for dinner.  All very very clean and delicious and PERFECT.  I haven’t felt this great in a while between all the plants and the exercise.  And after Super Saturday…well I am beyond motivated to keep going.  I’m going spend the next 2ish weeks eating pretty clean and working out regularly on schedule.  Then I’m going to reset and really kick myself in to high gear.  Post-reset – I’m probably going to do insanity or insanity/p90x hybrid until I head off to Vegas for Beachbody Summit.  Big plans but I am ready to bring my best self to Vegas and the next BB event.  I want to submit that best self for the BB challenge in June and I want to be able to stand longer at June Super Saturday as they count down the weight loss.

Focus.  Drive….let’s DO THIS!

The Year of Shaun T

I just realized that this was the year of Shaun T.

Finished round 1 of Insanity in January

Round 2 of Insanity May – July

Round of Focus T25 August – November (alpha through gamma)

Round of Asylum volume 1 November – December

And now back on Insanity for the rest of the year (will probably mix a few other workouts in as well).

Maybe I think I have a favorite trainer? For the record January – May I did a month of P90x, a month of Les Mills Combat, and a full Ultimate Reset (round 2).

Insanity – is my soulmate. It’s the workout that makes me happy because you don’t think, you just do. You never master it. You never can just totally nail a workout, there is always progress to make and work to be done. You will get results even if you modify like crazy. You don’t have to be in shape to start but you DO have to be willing to push through and always do a little more every workout.

Focus T25 – was good, but not right for me when I did it. I did it immediately following a round of insanity and it wasn’t doing it for me. By the time it picked up in beta phase I was softer than I came into it. I think it’s a great program for a beginner, to pick up after a layoff (I imagine a new mom would love this because of duration and the progression), or to mix in with running/weights. It does in my opinion set you up well for Insanity, especially if you do through gamma.

Asylum Vol 1 – great program and mix of strength/cardio. I saw good progress with this one and I imagine if I did it after insanity vs. focus t25 I would really beast mode on it. I did get a little tired towards the end as there really are few days off and I have been going pretty hard with exercise since May on top of starting to play volleyball on weekends. Asylum to me is very different than Insanity. It’s definitely more strength than cardio. I can tell now the progress I have made with strength because certain insanity moves (quad strengtheners) I can do now that I NEVER could do before. A hybrid of this and insanity (and maybe vol 2????) I think would be dynamite. Anyway, I think Asylum can be done by mostly everyone. Lots of the moves I knew from insanity and focus t25 but that daggum ladder is a mess.

So, are you a Shaun T junkie?? My 2014 plans include more diversity. P90x3, 21 Day Fix, and possibly a full round of Les Mills Combat to name a few!

Slow Motion

I am so so so ready for the three day weekend coming up.  August has been a fast and furious time for me.  Looking for a job, leaving a job, and starting a new job.  And this is probably going to sound kind of dumb – but being able to do absolutely nothing yet at my new job because of that normal new job start up time is actually really exhausting.  It’s boring just doing training and reading stuff that is not really pertinent to work yet all day for 40 hours a week.  But it’s almost over, I think next week I’ll be up and running 🙂

Anyway, the past few weeks I have gone HARD on Focus T25 ya’ll.  I mean hard.  Pushing, focusing on form, and I even snuck in a little sneak peek of Gamma phase.  And I’m really excited with the fact that I’m sore as heck right now.  I mean my legs and core are definitely saying – okay, I feel you.  Do know what the biggest difference has been?

I kind of stopped doing the “fast” version and started spending more time following Tania.  I started going s l o w e r and adjusted my thoughts on what that meant.

Often we think that we have to go HARD to get results.  With INSANITY I never expected to keep up and I never really could.  So I always worked at my pace with no expectation of keeping up and I often did my own modifications and made it work for me.  And I was sore and I saw results.

Enter Focus T25 and now after a few rounds of INSANITY – guess what?  I kind of can keep up with the workouts.  So I went for it, hard.  And a few weeks in I started to wonder why I wasn’t feeling anything.  Why I was not seeing anything really, lots of maintaining.  I can do ALL the moves!  And then I started slowing down.  Mostly because I noticed that I ended up doing this anyway on the 2nd workout of the double day and I was always wiped out afterwards.  And then I read an article posted by Carl Daikler about how INSANITY grads could benefit from Focus T25 and the emphasis was on form.  This week I have been going very slow and I’m feeling the burn.  I’m getting a better workout.  I’m pushing myself in a different way – a way that is actually the challenge that my body needs right now.

This was just a reminder of how individual the journey is for all of us.  I learn SO much from my teammates, challengers, and friends that I do these workouts with.  I also learn from just paying attention to how my body reacts to the workouts.  If you are doing workouts and not feeling that you are getting all you should out of it, take a second and think about why.  It could be how you are attacking the workout, that it’s the wrong workout, or maybe something else.

Focus T25 – One Week Down!

Week 1 of Focus T25 is in the books!!!  I wrote the review of each individual workout, but now I’m wrapping up the week and the fast track recipes.  I waited until Saturday am to take my weight and pictures since I was finishing the fast track meal plan all day Friday.

Okay so how do I feel?  Awesome. And sore.  Seriously seriously sore, lol.  Mostly I think from Lower Focus on Friday – but my behind and my core are on FIRE.  I feel tighter though in my stomach, so I guess something is working.  I don’t feel like I see a huge difference, but I feel less jiggle, so that is awesome.  I did lose 5 lbs, so I know that is why the jiggle is less.

And btw – that weight loss officially put me at over 90 lbs weight loss total!  My mind is blown ya’ll…I have less than 10 lbs less until my goal of being under 200 lbs is here and I don’t even know what to do with that info yet.

How was the fast track food?  It was pretty good.  I did modify it, I posted my plan here.  Mods were made to reduce the amount of meat, eliminate the dairy, and to save money.  Since there are only 2 of us, some of the foods I had to buy in bulk anyway (eggs, hamburger buns, ect) so I did what I could to use things over and over again.  I also added a few more calories here and there some days for me and every day for my husband.  I loved the chicken in foil and the roasted tofu recipes.  I also liked the eggs, although I made it more of an egg salad every time.  I was not a fan of the tropical qunioa.  It was just honestly disgusting and I ended up eating a granola bar instead.  I made oatmeal the next day for us both instead.  I also wasn’t a fan of the roast beef roll ups.  Maybe because I’m more vegan/vegetarian than carnivore these days.  But the combo of those foods – mustard, roast beef slices, red pepper, and lettuce – was just not good.  It was dry and meh.  I ended up picking at that snack a lot it took forever to eat it.

Neither of us felt particularly hungry during the fast track, probably again because we don’t really eat that much meat normally so it was very filling for us.  I loved planning out my meals like this again and plan on continue planning out every single meal/snack like this long term.  I will definitely repeat some meals and try some of the other meals out during the next 9 weeks of the program.  I like how simple these meals are to make.  I am busy with work and trying to find time to spend with my hubby – so I like that these meals are about 25 minutes max in the kitchen.  I usually prep food ahead, but I like that if I don’t, I can come in after work and still have a healthy clean option on the table faster than take out.

Where do I go from here?  I’m going to step back into vegetarian/vegan eating.  I love eggs so much I probably won’t ever be really fully vegan…but I do want to get closer again.  This week I’m planning a vegetarian menu.  I’ll be continuing with Focus T25 with Cardio in the morning and hopefully see continued success!

We are starting another set of challenge groups on September 1st with Focus T25, TurboFire, and Body Beast, if you want in, join the team here and pick out which challenge pack you want.  They are ALL on sale for a crazy price so get it fast.  Breakfast for 30 days + a 60-90 day exercise program for $140-180.  You can’t beat that.

Also follow my FB page – I will be posting more details as we get closer!

Focus T25 Week 1 Complete!!

I have officially finished week 1 of Focus T25!!  I will take my weight/pictures tomorrow am but so far I am really happy with one week of this program.  Before I get into that, first my review of the last 2 days of workouts.

Thursday – Ab Intervals

If you are familiar with Beachbody programs, you know that every single workout program comes with an ab workout.  It’s usually an add on.  You do x workout PLUS the ab workout.  In this program, it’s a whole workout to itself a full 25 minutes.  Now I’ve said this before – I don’t really understand why not doing crunches is a bonus, but whatever.  There are no crunches.  The progression method is used here again to build all of the core workouts from a very basic to a more advanced move.  This one was HARD, apparently my core is really weak because I struggled with holding the c-sit position not that long into the dvd.  The one thing I really liked was that we did do some cardio between the hard core moves – so I did feel like I had a really good workout at the end.  I was concerned this wouldn’t stand on it’s own, but it did.  I do wonder in week 4 will it stand on it’s own after I’m used to it and get stronger…but I guess at that point I’ll be moving on to the Beta phase anyway so whatevers.  My complaint?  Seriously not enough modifier views. That’s my running theme, I know.

Friday – Lower Focus and Cardio

Today was my first double Friday.  I decided to do them in the order they are on the calendar, so lower focus first.  Lower focus is awesome.  Hard as heck, but I really liked it.  Lots of squats, lunges, calf raises, everything.  All of the things you need to do to make your butt look fantastic.  Some of the moves are more strength based – slower with focus on going deep in the move.  Others are cardio focused.  Progression in use.  For this one – honestly there aren’t that many mods.  You can’t really mod a lunge or a squat.  You just have to do it at your own pace.  There are some cardio moves you have seen before repeated in here and many of those can be modified.  Even with the mods, this workout seriously burns your lower body.  By the end I was doing more of Tania’s mod program for the cardio moves than following Crazy Shaun T.  If you hold yourself properly during this workout, you also find that your core is going to be sore.  Shaun T doesn’t repeat this enough in Focus T25 – but hold your core.  Seriously.  Just like INSANITY and many other workouts in the world, holding your core tight helps stabilize your body during moves and helps strengthen those muscles.  I think I’m in the habit of doing it after INSANITY but it’s a reminder to you if you aren’t.

Okay so after I was toast from Lower Focus, I took a few sips of water, caught my breath, skipped the Lower Focus cool down and popped in the Cardio disc.  Then I went into it and did my best.  Cardio is to me the easiest of the workouts so far in Focus T25.  Do not confuse easiest with easy, but it’s certainly the best workout to have on the schedule in my opinion for the first double Friday.  Doing it back to back with Lower Focus, I found myself searching for Tania so I could figure out how to modify a LOT.  I pushed as hard as I could, but the Cardio workout is a LOT of jumping and a lot of leg moves and a lot of high knees. So after Lower Focus, whew, lol.  But I pushed and pushed and did all that I could do and I felt awesome at the end.

This is getting REALLY long – so I’ll save my week 1 overall thoughts for tomorrow’s blog.  If you have any questions about the program so far, leave me a comment and I’ll try to address it tomorrow or soon!!  If you are ready to take the plunge, pick up your Focus T25 Challenge pack here.  It’s on sale until the end of August 🙂

TWO Days Left

This week has been crazy busy with work and life – but I’m so happy to say that I’m through to Friday fairly unscathed.  I am so ready for graduation on Sunday, lol. It’s really hot out so I’ve been drinking tons of water and trying to keep up with my sleeping.  The workouts are still hard but I’m seeing some progress on what I can do each workout and starting to do more full sets in the as demoed move instead of modifying.  Today I did some push-ups on my toes that I had always had to modify to my knees (the side ones at the end of max interval plyo) and stayed on my toes more during the whole workout.  I’m not an INSANITY master yet, but I’m working on it 🙂

Honestly though – right now I’m just really ready for Sunday because I’m ready to get back to shorter workouts.  If there is one complaint I have about INSANITY, it’s that I wish month 2 had more shorter days.  I am definitely excited for my 2 week bridge + Focus T25 because I’m really ready to go hard for like 30 minutes then be done for the day.  I would love to get back into doing some yoga and I think I may use one of the off days to throw yoga in.  Or you know, to go do Hip Hop Hustle 🙂  Either way I’m ready to mix it up.  I know people do the same program over and over again and I’m still amazed at that with no break or change.  I guess that works if you love it…I’m just way too ADD for that.  Or I haven’t found that program that works with my brain like that I guess.  We will see 🙂

A couple of announcements:

Free shipping on Focus T25 has been extended until July 28th because of how popular the program has been and the fact that they sold out for a while.  So you still have time to save a few bucks and get your workouts in time for the August 5th challenge.

If you would like to get the Focus T25 Challenge pack – it’s only on sale for $180 until the end of the month, so don’t wait too long 🙂  It’s a chance to save $80+ over the regular price of the program + Shakeology, which is pretty awesome.  It’s essentially breakfast for 30 days + at least 10 weeks of exercise in one handy little box 🙂

7 INSANE Days Left!!

Okay friends….today was the first workout of the LAST week of INSANITY!  I can’t believe how fast this round has gone compared to the first round where I struggled much more to get through the workouts.  This time I am much stronger than before and I can tell.  I am doing Max Sports Interval Training instead of CCB and I think that is giving me an edge in the strength department.  Max Sports and CCB are very similar in format.  Max Sports is a tad bit longer, but I really like the big variety of exercises and how they are themed in Max Sports a lot.  PLUS I notice a soreness after Max Sports (the good kind of soreness…) that I don’t have after CCB.  I’m not sure why that is honestly…CCB is NOT easy for me…but I like it 🙂  Both workouts are some of my favorites in the whole program though!

With this being the last week, it’s time to really focus on nutrition to get me through.  There are seven days in a row of workouts – hard workouts – so I need to make sure I have the energy to get through the day.  So I’m packing a few extras in my lunch box, tons of raw veggies and product to get me through the day energized and packing beans, eggs, and more green veggies for protein.  Oh and having Shakeology every single morning (which I usually do anyway).  I’m making sure to eat clean and am focusing on how I feel to guide my decisions on what I need, I’m getting better at that..  I also probably will go to bed just a little bit earlier because I haven’t been getting enough sleep for my morning workouts.  It’s sometimes hard to do this because I like spending the evening with my husband.  But in reality it’s only about 15 extra minutes I need, which isn’t much all things considering.  I have to remember to tell myself that tonight 🙂

I am really curious to see how my body has changed though.  I don’t feel the dramatic changes like I did the first time.  The first time my stomach completely changed shape and I had such a huge visible difference it was kind of crazy.  Now, I am very close to the point where I am almost done with the weight loss portion of this journey and moving into the toning/sculpting phase and don’t have as much fat to lose.  I do feel stronger and feel like most of the changes are in the definition of my upper body and the general size of my lower half.  But I guess we will see in a week!!

New Date for Focus T25

Okay guys.  So I was ALL set to go ahead and start Focus T25 in a week and a half right? Along with some friends…it was time to tear it up.

Then Shaun T posted this video and I was like um….pause on that, lol!

I’m not sure if you follow Shaun T on social media – but he did a challenge for INSANITY a few months ago.  You know what the winner got?  A visit from Shaun T to hang/workout.  When homie says he has prizes…well he knows how to give out prizes.  And why not enter for prizes for something that you were going to do or thinking about doing anyway???  Exactly.

SO…the date is shifting for Focus T25.  We are now starting August 5th.  All the info is here to get the program.  Shoot me an email if you want to be in the group and let’s form a Shaunterage and get to winning.  One note – they are backordered with the base kits (when you order just the dvds) for Focus T25 right now due to how popular it is, so the kits are shipping about 7-10 days after order.  The challenge packs are shipping right away still (the challenge pack is the dvd set plus Shakeology which would be normally be $248 + shipping but is reduced to $180 and free shipping so it’s a pretty good deal AND you still get the bottom of the bag 30 day Shakeology guarantee).   Just keep this in mind as we get closer to August 5th (which is a Monday…so you need to order your base kit next week at the latest to get it on time).

I’m SO stinking excited – it’s going to be pretty awesome to follow this program with the man who created it.  If you know me, you know that Shaun T is pretty much my favorite fitness trainer.  INSANITY was the first program I had ever done that captured my ADD attention and I was able to stick with every day.  From the preview workouts Focus T25 is going to be exactly the same.  I can’t WAIT!!!

In the meantime I’m going to set up a two week plan for me and my insanity buddy to bridge the two programs since we will have 2 weeks between.  I’m pretty excited about that and will be working over the weekend to come up with a fat blasting but fun schedule!
