It Cosmetics Review

So today I’m going to discuss a little outer beauty because it’s something I’m working on right now.  I have mentioned before somewhere – probably Instagram – that I have a tendency to kind of bum around.  I think a leftover from days where I didn’t feel good about myself.  I would wear clothes that were too big, not really stylish and really shapeless, and I was pretty meh with my makeup and hair.  Now after doing some personal development I realized that most of that was really just more effects of me not taking care of myself and not caring about myself the way I should have…and that’s the biggest thing that I am working to change on my personal health journey.

So with that said, I follow a few pretty amazing fashion/makeup people online and one of them is Coach Glitter.  She is a MUAH who fashions the incredible Chalene Johnson so you know she knows her stuff.  And one thing she has mentioned for a while is It Cosmetics being some of the best stuff you can put on your face.  So when she posted about a QVC deal that we shouldn’t miss, I went ahead and purchased the kit which came in a pretty cute shiny box!

The kit came with a pretty nice selection of basic makeup needs.  Concealer, foundation/concealer brush, lip gloss, brow filler, anti-aging creme, and a complexion brush.  All these individually cost $230 from It Cosmetics directly, but the kit was around $70 with shipping.  Not bad for the full base kit.

I’ve been using the kit for a few weeks now and I LOVE it. I really do.  I love how simple it is – it’s about 10 minutes MAX and that’s because I add eyeliner because I don’t feel like my face is “done” if I don’t have on eyeliner.  Every once in a while I will add a little blush or eyeshadow but for the most part I use just what is in that picture above + my favorite black eyeliner (Bare Minerals) and go.  I love that it feels like a very natural look, like I don’t have on makeup other than the more obvious stuff (being the eyeliner and the lip gloss).

Anyway, I will say that right now this is a great little kit and a great purchase for me.  The only thing I probably need to do is purchase another concealer because this one is great for me while I am in my pale sun-less phase, but after a little sun It may be a bit too light.  One thing that I also love are the brushes in the kit.  I have some less fancy brushes and they do that annoying shedding thing…these do not.  So I’m pretty happy with that because these should last a while.  I guess the only thing left is to figure out how long this kit will last me while using it 4-6 days a week and then figure out the refill situation!

25 Tenacious Minutes

I’m FINALLY over this crazy stomach bug and feeling back to normal.  I didn’t quite workout as much as I wanted to this week, but I’m okay with that because I obviously needed to rest to feel better.  I will certainly kick some major butt this week though – in the living room (aka the gym) and in the kitchen.

My exercise plan is to modify things just a little since I am kind of bummed about missing some of my favorite workouts this week.  The Fire 45 EZ and Combat Warrior 1: Upper Body.  I’m going to try to get those in somehow, those are two workouts I LOVE and I need to get them in before going into Focus T25.  I also may do some yoga again this week, I miss it and the studio has a special right now for only a few classes which fits in with my life plans.

My food plan is to go through my frozen foods in my freezer and eat them up.  I have a TON of frozen vegetables – single serve (will be perfect to take for lunch) and stir fry mixes.  I also have frozen potatoes, brown rice, veggie burgers, and some veggie lasagna that is our “back up” meal for if we run out of pre-prepped food to try to keep ourselves from eating at restaurants when we shouldn’t.  I have plenty of food there along with a cabinet of beans, rice, soups, and pasta to fill out the week for 2 people.  I will go get some fresh produce and some eggs and I will be set for the week!  Nothing fancy going down this week – just planning on getting in the calories and macros I need with what I have.

Catching Up

I’m so behind the ball this week.  A stomach bug has taken me out and it’s been a rough week.  I have kept up with a few of the workouts and am at a point where I’m starting to feel normal again and am eating almost normal, woop!

So I wanted to catch up and first of all share the 2 week schedule I am supposed to be following.

The schedule mixes a few awesome programs and is a lot of fun.  I really enjoyed doing Les Mills Combat again, it is one of my favorite programs because it really does push me and I feel it the next day.  I did Combat 30 yesterday morning and today I’m pretty sore in my upper body.  Turbo Fire just wears me out in general.  Hip Hop Abs is not quite as intense as the other two, but considering how I feel this week, that was perfect.  I didn’t do Fire 45 EZ yet this week.  I may just do that and Combat and skip the last Hip Hop Abs workout for the week.  We will see, it will depend on how I feel and what I can eat.

Complete side note.  Is anyone watching Under the Dome?  This show is ridiculous and I have no clue where it is heading after the last episode!  I do wish more shows were put straight onto online sources with no commercials though, thumbs up for that!

 

INSANITY Round 2 Complete!

As of yesterday I can proudly say that I have completed two complete rounds of INSANITY!  I’m pretty excited about that and am really proud of that fact.  I completed my fit test and was pretty much blown away from the results of this test compared to my first test back in May:

  • Switch Kicks – 111 (+26)
  • Power Jacks – 51 (+13)
  • Power Knee – 125 (+32)
  • Globe Jumps – 12 (+3)
  • Suicide Jumps – 16 (+2)
  • Pushup Jacks – 36 (+14)
  • Low Plank Oblique – 70 (+21)

I lost 11 lbs this round and went from a tight-ish size 16 to a very comfortable size 14.  On top, I am down to a medium in most tops, however if it has a tight fit on the arm, I will need a large.  All in all – I have NO complaints and once again this program has exceeded all expectations and given me great results.

Diet wise – I didn’t 100% follow this program guide.  I continued to eat very clean, mostly vegetarian but not strictly at all, and tons of water (about a gallon a day).  Nothing very written out, but you have seen many of the recipes I eat posted on here.

Life wise – I’m so happy to be done with this round!  I love the program…but I don’t understand how people do it back to back, lol.  I am ready for a break and am really pumped about my current 2 week regimen before I go into Focus T25.  I will post that tomorrow.  Essentially it’s a fun mix of a lot of programs that will keep me going but ease down from the hour of INSANITY.  Today was Turbo Fire 30 class.  Awesome and FUN.  Not that INSANITY isn’t fun…but it’s a totally different thing than a dance party with Chalene Johnson 🙂

 

TWO Days Left

This week has been crazy busy with work and life – but I’m so happy to say that I’m through to Friday fairly unscathed.  I am so ready for graduation on Sunday, lol. It’s really hot out so I’ve been drinking tons of water and trying to keep up with my sleeping.  The workouts are still hard but I’m seeing some progress on what I can do each workout and starting to do more full sets in the as demoed move instead of modifying.  Today I did some push-ups on my toes that I had always had to modify to my knees (the side ones at the end of max interval plyo) and stayed on my toes more during the whole workout.  I’m not an INSANITY master yet, but I’m working on it 🙂

Honestly though – right now I’m just really ready for Sunday because I’m ready to get back to shorter workouts.  If there is one complaint I have about INSANITY, it’s that I wish month 2 had more shorter days.  I am definitely excited for my 2 week bridge + Focus T25 because I’m really ready to go hard for like 30 minutes then be done for the day.  I would love to get back into doing some yoga and I think I may use one of the off days to throw yoga in.  Or you know, to go do Hip Hop Hustle 🙂  Either way I’m ready to mix it up.  I know people do the same program over and over again and I’m still amazed at that with no break or change.  I guess that works if you love it…I’m just way too ADD for that.  Or I haven’t found that program that works with my brain like that I guess.  We will see 🙂

7 INSANE Days Left!!

Okay friends….today was the first workout of the LAST week of INSANITY!  I can’t believe how fast this round has gone compared to the first round where I struggled much more to get through the workouts.  This time I am much stronger than before and I can tell.  I am doing Max Sports Interval Training instead of CCB and I think that is giving me an edge in the strength department.  Max Sports and CCB are very similar in format.  Max Sports is a tad bit longer, but I really like the big variety of exercises and how they are themed in Max Sports a lot.  PLUS I notice a soreness after Max Sports (the good kind of soreness…) that I don’t have after CCB.  I’m not sure why that is honestly…CCB is NOT easy for me…but I like it 🙂  Both workouts are some of my favorites in the whole program though!

With this being the last week, it’s time to really focus on nutrition to get me through.  There are seven days in a row of workouts – hard workouts – so I need to make sure I have the energy to get through the day.  So I’m packing a few extras in my lunch box, tons of raw veggies and product to get me through the day energized and packing beans, eggs, and more green veggies for protein.  Oh and having Shakeology every single morning (which I usually do anyway).  I’m making sure to eat clean and am focusing on how I feel to guide my decisions on what I need, I’m getting better at that..  I also probably will go to bed just a little bit earlier because I haven’t been getting enough sleep for my morning workouts.  It’s sometimes hard to do this because I like spending the evening with my husband.  But in reality it’s only about 15 extra minutes I need, which isn’t much all things considering.  I have to remember to tell myself that tonight 🙂

I am really curious to see how my body has changed though.  I don’t feel the dramatic changes like I did the first time.  The first time my stomach completely changed shape and I had such a huge visible difference it was kind of crazy.  Now, I am very close to the point where I am almost done with the weight loss portion of this journey and moving into the toning/sculpting phase and don’t have as much fat to lose.  I do feel stronger and feel like most of the changes are in the definition of my upper body and the general size of my lower half.  But I guess we will see in a week!!

So it was decided that Saturdays are STATurdays in Team Tenacity.  Sooo I’m going to start posting mine weekly here for the record.

  • Body Fat: 29.8% (July 5th…I’ll go again probably in a month or so)
  • Bust: 40 inches
  • Hips: 48 inches
  • Waist: 32 .5 inches
  • R Bicep: 14.75 inches
  • R Thigh: 28.25 inches
  • Clothing sizes: Pants – size 16/XL with some 14s starting to fit well and L in knit skirts.  Shirts – mostly L/M with some S mixed in.

I’ll update weekly.  It will be interesting to see what changes especially as I go into some different workouts over the next few weeks!

New Date for Focus T25

Okay guys.  So I was ALL set to go ahead and start Focus T25 in a week and a half right? Along with some friends…it was time to tear it up.

Then Shaun T posted this video and I was like um….pause on that, lol!

I’m not sure if you follow Shaun T on social media – but he did a challenge for INSANITY a few months ago.  You know what the winner got?  A visit from Shaun T to hang/workout.  When homie says he has prizes…well he knows how to give out prizes.  And why not enter for prizes for something that you were going to do or thinking about doing anyway???  Exactly.

I’m SO stinking excited – it’s going to be pretty awesome to follow this program with the man who created it.  If you know me, you know that Shaun T is pretty much my favorite fitness trainer.  INSANITY was the first program I had ever done that captured my ADD attention and I was able to stick with every day.  From the preview workouts Focus T25 is going to be exactly the same.  I can’t WAIT!!!

In the meantime I’m going to set up a two week plan for me and my insanity buddy to bridge the two programs since we will have 2 weeks between.  I’m pretty excited about that and will be working over the weekend to come up with a fat blasting but fun schedule!

 

Obesity as a Disease

Apparently back in June, the American Medical Association officially recognized obesity as a disease.  This recognition now opens the doors for tax deductions for obesity treatments, more coverage from insurance for drugs and surgery to “treat” obesity and official diagnosis by your doctor.  Essentially, you could state you “have obesity” the same way one would say they have diabetes.

Can I be honest with you?  I’m really really torn about this.

The first reason that I’m torn is I’m not really sure how you diagnose someone as obese.  And I am certainly concerned that since our medical community tends to be reactive instead of preventative, treatments will not get to the root of the issue…which is different for everybody.  The article brings up the obvious problems with using BMI as a diagnosis tool.  Especially since there have been studies that show for different ethnic groups the actual numbers for BMI may need to shift IF the point of BMI is to indicate an unhealthy weight.  How long do you have to be obese before you are  diagnosed?  Do you have to have attempted legitimate lifestyle changes (monitored??  on your own??  for how long??) before you are diagnosed as obese?  If you are obese and you lose enough weight to be considered overweight or normal weight, are you in remission from being obese?  Using the word cured seems kind of weird to me for this one.

All those aside, the biggest reason – is this going to become the new “I’m just big boned” going forward?

Now, there are some very real benefits to this, the biggest one I see is that if a child is diagnosed as obese, it will force the parents to face some real facts since the cause for a child’s obesity is probably much different than that of me as a grown woman.  Perhaps it will help the push for better school lunches and bring back physical education in schools.

I also think that if we can all decide that the FIRST treatment for obesity will be diet and exercise and perhaps a therapy session then I’m okay with that.  Perhaps if someone can get insurance covered referrals to a nutritionist or heck, a personal trainer, then that will get them started to make some lifestyle changes.  And why a therapy session?  Because for some (many?) people, there are some things that need to be worked out before they can even embark on a lifestyle change.  Many people who were abused, were involved with a traumatic incident, or as a result of a divorce or death in the family gain weight.  And for these people, maybe they have to handle that before they can get mentally in a place where they can make these life changes.  Not everyone who is obese needs this, but some people do. And just throwing them into surgery or on a pill doesn’t fix the problem that got them to where they are in the first place and won’t help them maintain a healthy weight going forward.

I also think that for many people this will force them to face facts. I know MANY of us that weren’t really fully aware of how bad off we were until we lost weight or something bad medically happened to us or we hit rock bottom.  Maybe if we can really start the work before rock bottom happens then people won’t get so sick (type 2 diabetes, heart issues, ect).

I guess I am a little biased on this one – I have had a doctor throw a weight loss pill prescription at me (one of the worst doctors I have ever seen btw – who does that the first visit).  He didn’t do ANY blood work first nor did he even ask me if I was exercising or about my diet.  And it didn’t help me at all.  I really hope that isn’t what starts happening now.  If we really want to “cure” obesity in America – it has to be an attack on all sides.  Working on getting rid of food deserts, lowering the cost of fresh foods (come one – it’s kind of ridiculous that I can buy a value meal from McDonalds for the same cost as 2 lbs of non-organic grapes or apples), educating people on how to eat and exercise, and changing our culture to embrace healthier habits in general (to include the chronic stress that is praised in America that raises hormone levels and aids to weight gain).  If we think the treatment is only about prescription pads and scalpels….I’m not sure we will really see the actual trend change.

Cheating…is it really ok?

The 4th of July holiday is like most holidays for us Americans.  We (usually, typically) have family or friends around.  And lots of food.  And alcohol.  Every region/family has their favorites, but for most of us, it’s not a salad and fruit holiday – it’s chips, BBQ, potato salad, cakes, pies, ice cream.  It’s a day of freedom and for most of us, that is also freedom from our diet.

If you follow me on social media, you know that I don’t participate in dieting.  Not because it doesn’t work, because it does for many people.  But it 100% does not work for me.  If it did I would have lost more weight when I was doing Weight Watchers and I wouldn’t have started my journey in January 2012 at the highest weight I have ever seen.  The reason I think it does not work is that it allowed me to change from obsessing about food to obsessing about points.  And then just like what happened with food, after so long of doing really well, something breaks and a binge happens.  And how do you recover from a binge?  You start obsessing about points and eating crazy perfect and depriving yourself.  Back and forth, back and forth.  A vicious cycle of total unhealthy thinking.

So what the hell does this have to do with the holidays?

It’s this.  Now, a few days away from the holiday and a day removed from the official weekend, I see so many people commenting about the fact that in order to enjoy the holiday, food must be consumed in massive amounts.  And that the holiday demands so much food that you feel awful then get restrictive and super clean to balance out the holiday. So Monday is the day to clean it up and detox and cleanse and….the dreaded start over.

Sounds familiar?

I thought about this for a few days and it took me a bit of time to figure out why this whole cycle really bothered me when I read about it.  But I think it bothers me so much because it really is a demonstration of the lack of moderation that happens on deprivation style diets.  That celebrations for many of us means eating things that we would NEVER eat on a daily basis or we plan in a cheat day so we can eat the things that we would eat in a much smaller quantity or not at all, but they all become totally acceptable because a date on the calendar makes it ok.

Let me be clear – I’m not anti-holiday or anti-dessert (or alcohol or bbq or any other delicious food despite my tree hugger eating mentality).  I love all that stuff, you don’t get to 300 lbs without liking a few cupcakes and eating a few burgers.  But I am anti cheat days.

I believe in injecting a little moderation into our lives daily/weekly/monthly/whatever so a certain cheat date isn’t built up as the “how many calories can I stuff into my body quickly” holiday.   Not because the food is bad, but because the cycle of saving up for a certain day mentally is not a lifestyle model.  Or is it?  It’s so common in the weight loss community that it is certainly not abnormal thinking or something that gets you a second look.  I’m almost 100% convinced that in life for reaching a certain weight/size goal you are better off being consistent, not perfect.

I guess I want to challenge anyone who reads this blog to start trying to live with a little moderation instead of deprivation/explode model.  If you made it through this entire ramble,  thank you!  I’d love to hear your thoughts.  This topic is a hard one – I think it’s very personal what diet works for you mentally and physically.  Although I do believe that they aren’t always the same answer as sometimes you have to go for sustainability mentally over sometimes faster weight loss that drives you coo coo for cocoa puffs.  And that overrides science.  Right?
