Hip Hop Hustle

Today I took my first ever Hip Hop Hustle class! I have wondered about the format for a while and since one of my Team Tenacity teammates who just moved here loves it AND I lost a bet to her over the NCAA men’s basketball championship game….it was time to pay up and try it out.

So right from the start I was loving the music. Great beats and good dance music. The class wasn’t crowded at all so I had a clear view of the instructor. Then we got into building the choreography. It’s a nice mix of dance moves (yeah, we butterflied!) and fitness moves (but dancified -grapevine with high knees, skis, ect). You STAY on the move in this class the entire time. The choreography builds and by the end you have a nice routine.

I love to dance and am pretty good with memorizing choreography, but you really don’t have to be. The moves are simple and the repetition locks them in. By the end you know the moves and you can just have a party and go hard through the class.

Yeah I burned as much in this class as I do in an hour of insanity. And it doesn’t feel like I should at all. It’s fun, flows well, and is just not as painful lol. I was surprised for sure.

I can’t wait for the next time I can make it!! I have a few more weeks of insanity left, but after that, since T25 is only 5 days a week I will definitely go more often!

Progress – 9 months in

Posting some new progress pics! I’m always kind of amazed at it. I still struggle sometimes with realizing how much weight I have lost – I still buy clothes too big and bring them home lol. I like pictures because the scale just doesn’t show you the change. What does 10 or 100 lbs look like? Hard to imagine for me. Also pics show what the scale can’t…like muscles 🙂 anyway – here I am:

I was 278 in the left pic and 214 in the right. 64 lbs down!! I will try to remember to do monthly updates 🙂

This week with insanity – whoa! As one of my girls in my fit bombshells group says – I am maxed out lol. Seriously though – its like starting over. I’m sore and feeling like I am going slow. But I’m burning 600+ cals a workout right now and seeing inches disappear – so it’s all good 🙂

INSANITY Fit Test #3

Yesterday was the doozy workout – fit test + max circuit intervals.  1.5 hours of crazy insane fun with Shaun T and the crew.  I both loathe and love this workout.  Loathe it because it’s a long day and I have to get up really early.  Love it because I feel like a super woman after working out and actually making it through the workout without crying.

So the fit test results are (drumroll!!!)

  • Switch kicks – 108 (+3)
  • Power jacks – 54 (+8)
  • Power knee – 109 (+2)
  • Power jumps – 35 (+3)
  • Globe jumps – 10 (no change)
  • Suicide jumps – 16 (+1)
  • Pushup jacks – 34 (+4)
  • Low plank oblique – 53 (-6)

Overall not a bad fit test.  I went down only on one thing from the fit test #2 and it was the last exercise so I’m wondering if i was burned out by then.  Who knows…but I’m really happy with how much I’m improving every fit test and how much stronger I am getting.

So now – I’m 2 workouts into month 2.  Month 2 is where the change happens IMO.  The workouts start to really push your endurance and strength more here.  I can tell I’m in much better shape than my last round of INSANITY because I’m jumping more during my workouts and burning more calories at a lower weight because of that.  I just bought some inserts for my shoes to help my poor little flat feet out and they made a world of difference already.  I also bought new shoes since the inserts were kind of big and didn’t fit well in my old shoes. Sucks since I just bought those a month ago…but necessary to protect my feet so I’m not complaining for real.  I do NOT want to get hurt and be out of commission for weeks (months?) and I know that having flat feet means that I have to pay attention to what is going on with them and baby them now that I am doing more plyo during INSANITY.

Focus T25 Order Info

I am so excited about this program!  It eliminates the “not enough time” excuse by not only being a short workout, but only being 5 days a week.  And you know with it being lead by Shaun T – it’s going to be intense, but it’s going to work.

Don’t Forget the Fat!

This week I focused hard on what I was eating.  I at TONS of produce all day every day.  Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables made my body happy and I felt much better after eating too much dairy last weekend.  I ate essentially the same thing every day, which is what I typically do Monday through Friday anyway.  I did mix up the actual fruits and veggies over the course of the week based on what was in the fridge and what I was in the mood for.

My raw foods were basically my Shakeology (I had vegan Chocolate and Tropical Strawberry this week), fruits, nuts, veggies (in chopped form to snack on and in salad form).  I made a strawberry salad dressing which was good, but I need to play around with a little more before it’s really great (mostly because I have to remember why coconut oil is NOT a good choice lol).

For cooked foods, I ate my favorite vegan recipe EVER – black-eyed pea jambalaya.  I also had roasted broccoli one night because I was just craving it.  The hubs and I are big sushi fans so we had sushi a few times (crab for him, veggie for me).  I used hummus to dip veggies in and played around with nut butters to complement my fruits.

So I ended this week feeling REALLY awesome and showing some baby muscles when I flex 🙂

I learned a few really valuable lessons this week.  The first is how important it is to pay attention to your macros when you make diet changes.  As I cut out cheese and ate more raw fruits and veggies I realized quickly that I needed to add fat into my diet in other ways.  I don’t eat much meat these days, so aside from eggs most of my fat comes from the oils I use to cook my food in (I use very generous amounts of fat).  Cooking less of my food and not having as many eggs this week meant my fat intake was WAY too low.  I realized this after the first day and started adding a spoonful (or two, it’s delicious) of almond butter to my morning Shakeology instead of using the PB powder.  The almond tastes way better than the peanut in the shakes for sure and I got a nice dose of fat.  It’s little things like this that make a big difference.  After starting to add the fat into my shake in the morning I felt better and wasn’t hungry.  I will certainly remember this going forward and I will probably keep making my morning shake with almond butter instead of PB powder.  It tastes better and it allows me to up my fat in a healthy satisfying way when I start the day.

Produce Explosion

This week so far I have been throwing back veggies and fruit and water like crazy. I was feeling very run down from all the travel + social events the past week, so that made the decision to be super clean very easy.

So here are (most of) my eats the last few days.

As you can see, I like to drink my calories 🙂 I usually don’t, but this week I decided to experiment with smoothie recipes to up my raw produce intake because chewing veggies is really annoying after a time. And to mix it up so I don’t get bored. For dinner I’ve been eating my FAVORITE recipe I’ve found since changing my eating lifestyle – black eyed pea jambalaya – with fresh fruit and veggies. So far I’m feeling much better. I ate too much cheese this weekend and I could tell on Monday morning – I was bloated and sluggish. Already feeling 100% better. I also am making sure to go to bed on time, so that is helping too. It’s a little mini reset 🙂

I am ready for the rest of the week. I’ll probably eat most of the same thing, but I have a few recipes in my hip pocket if we run out of the jambalaya. I made the hubby a casserole for lunch (there is NO way I’m getting him on board for a week of salads for lunch lol), so I may need to cook my backup recipes. I also may need to make more salad dressing!

INSANITY: Recovery Week

I finally made it to recovery week, woot!!  That means I’ve done 4 straight weeks of INSANITY.  I didn’t miss a workout and am pretty proud of the work that I did while traveling and going to quite a few social events.  So far, this round of INSANITY has been pretty different because I’m way more capable of doing the exercises.  I am getting through the warmup without stopping and getting through the workout with significantly fewer breaks.  I’m really excited because this means better results and better work.  And I’m not saying it’s easy..because it’s definitely still the hardest workout I’ve ever done.  But what’s difficult now isn’t so much the actual move, but just trying to do the move with the INSANITY crew.

My favorite workout is still cardio strength and power…but I don’t hate plyo as much anymore.  Being in better shape makes the workout more of a challenge instead of being a nemesis.

This week is core cardio and balance.  It’s called a recovery workout, but it’s not easy, just a slightly less intense pace.  Because it’s a slightly less intense workout I’m going to deviate a little from my normal eating plan to try some new things this week.  The new things being mainly pumping more fruit and veggies into my diet daily.  I’m a little run down right now with the last few weeks of traveling and parties and weddings and you know, just sitting on a Delta flight for hours on the ground after waking up at 3:30 am.  I already eat a lot, but I want to do more fresh/raw fruits and veggies.  Bigger salads, more fruit in my shakes, and more veggies in my snacks. I already made a strawberry based salad dressing, so more fruit!  I really am going to pump myself with as much natural goodness as I can this week.  I’ve been working hard on this since finishing the first Ultimate Reset and am constantly working on improving in this area.  This week gives me a chance to play around a little since it’s a little slower and hopefully try some new things that will be carried over into the crazy month 2.

I’ll post my meals and my smoothie creations that are successful in taste this week and let you guys know how it goes.  I’m hoping to see some weight loss in the form of reducing bloat, getting back on my sleep schedule, and learning a way to add more produce without feeling like I’m overeating or sacrificing the rest of my food.  I tend to get really full when I have raw produce – so the struggle is making sure I’m eating enough calories…which is why this week is experiment week 🙂  I also am going to be 100% meat and dairy free.  I’m not promising vegan because I heart eggs.  But I’ve been eating too much dairy again, so time to cut that out.

Focus T25!!

Next month a new challenge group is starting up – Focus T25.  What is it?  It’s a new program by Shaun T that is set up as a 5 day a week, 25 minutes a day program.

I’m so excited about this program because I know it’s Shaun T so it will be intense and I am going to love only  having to do 25 minutes a day (hello waking up a little later!!!).  I will be starting this program as soon as I finish my current round of INSANITY or as soon as I receive it if it ends up shipping later (learning from experience…there is no reason to have gaps between programs unless I have some specific reason I can’t start it…I thrive on structure).  If you would like to join me, please join my team (no cost, just select join and you will be added) and I will send you an email when this program actually goes up for sale.

Just a few FAQ that I’ve gotten so far:

  • How long is the program?  It’s a 10 week program broken down into 2 phases – alpha and beta.  Each phase is 5 weeks long.
  • How much is the program?  No pricing info has been released officially yet, but based on some of the promotional info online it looks like it will be priced in the $119-$149 range.
  • When is it available?  It seems like it will be available for order around the end of the month, it is being released first at Coach’s Summit, then for the public afterwards.
  • Is there a pre-order?  No, not for this program unfortunately.

Pizza at Home: Rustic Crust Review

The man and I both have a huge weakness when it comes to the p word – pizza.  I try to avoid it usually honestly.  For one because of the dairy and for two because I have a hard time controlling my portions.  I’ve been trying to make healthier versions our favorite meals to help us stay on track and this week I tried a new pizza crust and sauce, Rustic Crust – an all natural brand I found in the organic/health foods section of Wegmans.

The calories on this aren’t bad – around 280 calories for a whole crust.  The ingredients for the crust are whole wheat flour, water, salted butter, unbleached/unbromated enriched wheat flour, pure olive oil, soybean oil, yeast, salt, spices, basil, parsley.  The ingredients on the sauce are water, tomatoes, and 2% or less of olive oil, evaporated cane juice, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, spice, vinegar.  All in all a fairly decent ingredient list.

The instructions for making the pizza are a little weird – you have to heat the oven to 450, then take it back down to 425.  It’s probably not that weird, but just awkward for me because of my odd oven that doesn’t let me switch temps without turning it off first.

After brushing EVOO on the crust (as directed), I topped my pizza with a ton of red peppers, green peppers, onion, mushrooms, a bit of cheese, and a little italian sausage. I think sprinkled the whole thing with dried parsley and basil for a little more flavor.  The directions say to put it directly on the oven shelf, but I put foil down first because my pizza was pretty loaded and I didn’t want a mess.

Anyway – the final result!

It tasted great!  Lots of flavor from the crust and loaded with veggies personalized to what I love (hello super mushrooms!!).  I was very pleased with this pizza crust and the way it baked up and so was the man.  I’m not saying I’m going to start eating pizza every day or anything, but on a night when I am having a serious pizza jones, this is going to be my new plan.  Not just because the crust is so much better for me, but I can control what goes on top of it and it doesn’t trigger me like pizza delivery does to overeat, probably because it’s just less decadent and less crappy products.
